A New PB For Magnus Morris At The Scottish Open

The world of elite swimming is a masterclass in resilience. One minute you are celebrating a massive breakthrough on the touchpads, and the next you are forced to navigate the unpredictable hurdles of competitive sport. Foundation athlete Magnus Morris experienced the full spectrum of those highs and lows last weekend at the Scottish Open Championships.

Heading into the meet, Magnus was in peak physical condition. Since the British Championships, his training blocks had been spectacular, locking in massive performance numbers in both the pool and the gym.

The Breakthrough: A New 100m Freestyle PB!

The hard work paid off instantly on Friday. Racing in the competitive 100m Freestyle, Magnus put together a flawless race to smash his lifetime personal best by half a second!

What makes this milestone even sweeter is that it marks his first personal best in the event since 2024. Breaking through a multi-year plateau is a massive mental and physical victory, proving that his targeted endurance training is working exactly as planned.

The Ultimate Hurdle

As the weekend progressed, Magnus lined up for the 50m Backstroke and the 50m Butterfly, securing a spot in Saturday night’s 50m Fly ‘B’ Final. However, sprinting at maximum velocity comes with risks. Mid-race, Magnus unfortunately suffered a partial shoulder subluxation (popping the shoulder out), injuring himself in the pool. The injury was a devastating blow, forcing him to scratch from Sunday’s events – the 100m Butterfly and 50m Freestyle – which were the primary targets he had built his entire training cycle around.

Eyes on the Horizon: Irish Nationals

Magnus isn’t letting the setback derail his focus. He is already pivoting his attention to recovery and preparation for his final meet of the season: the Irish National Championships at the end of July.

Magnus will look to finish the cycle on a high in the 50m Freestyle and 50m Backstroke before earning a well-deserved summer rest until September.

Huge congrats on the new Freestyle PB, Magnus! We are wishing you a speedy recovery and the absolute best of luck across the water at the Irish Nationals!
