A Strong Fourth in Europe for Ross Laird’s Team and Sights Set on Home Soil

It’s been a whirlwind few weeks for Ross Laird on the golf course, and we wanted to share a look back at his busy and exciting period of golf. Ross’ summer schedule was packed, kicking off with a trip to Hungary to represent Scotland in the European Team Championships.

The event was held at the magnificent Zala Springs Golf Resort from the 8th to the 12th of July. Ross said it was ‘an honour’ to wear the saltire and compete alongside the team. His team got off to a fantastic start with the team finishing 4th in the initial stroke-play qualifying, which secured their spot in the top flight, Flight A.

Their first match-play test was a quarter-final against Slovenia, where the team put in a commanding performance to win 5-2. This victory propelled them into a semi-final showdown with Wales. It was a tough battle, but unfortunately came up short, losing the tie 5.5 – 1.5. This meant they had one last match to play for the bronze medal against a strong Austrian team. It was an incredibly close-fought contest that went right down to the wire, but they narrowly lost 4-3, resulting in an overall 4th place finish for Scotland.

Ross commented:

“Personally, I was very happy with my form throughout the week, managing to win three out of my four matches. My game felt like it was in great shape, and it was a brilliant confidence boost.”

Ross’ plan following Hungary is to take a couple of weeks to rest and fine-tune a few things before the next major event, the Scottish Men’s Amateur Championship at Gullane. Ross said his intention during that break is to play a couple of practice rounds to get to know the course and prepare properly.

Looking beyond that, the final key event on the summer calendar is the Home Internationals at Woodhall Spa in England, which was contingent on selection for the team.

Ross said:

“It was a fantastic experience in Hungary, and I came away feeling positive about where my game was heading into the rest of the season.”
