As the new basketball season approaches, we wanted to share an update from Gavin Mitchell on the hard work and commitment he has poured into his development over the past few months.
The 17-year-old forward from West Dunbartonshire has shown immense focus during his crucial 8-week off-season, laying a strong foundation for the challenges ahead with his team, the Oakland Wolves.

The Off-Season Grind
For any serious athlete, the off-season is not a time for rest, but a time for growth. It’s an opportunity to fine-tune skills and build strength without the pressure of weekly competition, and Gavin has taken full advantage of this.
His structured weekly routine was a testament to his dedication, featuring:
Four one-on-one training sessions with a trainer to sharpen technical skills and focus on strength and conditioning.
Two competitive scrimmages to apply his training in high-pressure, game-like scenarios.
Two team training sessions to maintain a sharp, competitive mindset.
Throughout this period, Gavin concentrated on elevating key areas of his game, including:
Ball handling and footwork
Shooting consistency under pressure
Decision-making and situational awareness
Overall strength, speed, and agility
Pre-Season Preparations
On August 27th, Gavin returned to campus to officially kick off the pre-season with his teammates. The focus has now shifted from individual development to collective success. The team is immersed in intensive training sessions, mastering systems and strategies while rebuilding the essential chemistry and communication needed to win.
With pre-season games already underway, the squad is testing its preparations and gearing up for the competitive season ahead.
Looking to the Season Ahead
The new season officially begins at the end of September, and it promises to be a demanding one. Gavin will be balancing his academic studies with a rigorous schedule of training and two competitive games each week. He will be competing in both the Elite Academy Basketball League (EABL) with the Oakland Wolves academy and the men’s National League Division 2.
Gavin’s commitment, both on and off the court, is truly impressive. We are thrilled to be part of his journey and cannot wait to follow his progress this season.
Join us in wishing Gavin and the Oakland Wolves the very best of luck for the 2025-2026 season!
