Scott Newman Targets Breakthrough Year in 2025 Golf Season

Scott Newman is set for an exciting 2025 season as he focuses on improving his World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) and preparing for his move to the United States in August.

The young Scottish golfer has a well-balanced schedule of National, Men’s, County, and U19 events, all aimed at enhancing his ranking and gaining entry into prestigious amateur tournaments. His primary goal for the year is to break into the top 2000 players in the world, which would grant him access to elite UK amateur events such as the Lytham Trophy, St Andrews Links Trophy, and The Amateur Championship.

Scott currently holds a +1.5 handicap, which he aims to lower throughout the season. His scoring average stands at 73, with a target of reducing it to at least 72, ideally between 69-71.

At the end of last season, Scott regained his WAGR ranking, reaching a career-best 2537 before dropping to 3709 due to a lack of winter events while US college and warm-climate players continued competing. However, based on the progression of similar Scottish players, a push into the top 2000 is a realistic and vital goal to gain entry into higher-ranked tournaments that will offer more WAGR points and ranking opportunities.

Scott is also looking to climb the European U21 rankings, where he currently sits at 221, with a target of breaking into the top 100. In the men’s rankings, he is currently 573 and will work to lower this significantly over the season.

Scott continues to refine his game under the guidance of Finton Bonner at St Andrews, who coaches many of Scotland’s top amateur golfers, including Connor Graham, the youngest-ever Walker Cup player. Recent assessments have highlighted the need for a new driver, which Scott is currently exploring.

Looking ahead, Scott has committed to playing US College Golf from August 2025 at Lindsey Wilson College in Kentucky, the current No.1-ranked NAIA program. This move is seen as a stepping stone toward NCAA Division 1 golf.

He has secured a $35,000 scholarship towards his $40,000 tuition, not including expenses such as health insurance, visa, and flights.

With a competitive schedule, a dedicated training program, and a clear roadmap for progression, 2025 is set to be a defining year for Scott Newman as he continues his rise in amateur golf.
